IN:Camera Production Workshop

A time to say goodbye.

After 7 years of resounding success, InCamera has rolled the last credit.

Back in 1999 a small and determined group of filmmakers wanted to share their knowledge to build a sustaining, vibrant community of women media art producers in Calgary. Michelle Wong, Sandi Somers, Shauna Kennedy, Michele L., Kelly Langgard and Sharon Stevens were the core women whose vision and determination ensured that InCamera was founded, funded and flourished every year for 7 more years.

With this foundation and a massive amount of organizing, the InCamera workshop was provided to women at no cost. Free. How much more accessible can we get? A proud fact made possible through the funding from The Canada Council for the Arts and other smaller funders through the years.

From its inception, this unique workshop was designed to create a space for women with limited access and experience in film production. Guided by established and experienced women media makers, an intensive creative environment was designed to facilitate the powerful process from thought to image. This was an incredible opportunity for women, through a women's run organization, to be instructed and mentored by fellow women artists.

From the year 2000 and for 10 days every year since 9 women experienced an intensive journey taking them through the process of filmmaking including: social awareness, story development, production logistics, camera, directing, and editing. Individually and together these women explored personal expression through their creative vision resulting in a remarkable collection of short films.

Sixty-two in total now! What a collection and what a legacy. Many of these filmmakers have gone on to produce more media art and add to the vibrant and dynamic film and video community in Calgary.

This legacy would not have continued year after year without facilitators Sandi Somers, Shauna Kennedy and Corinne Cornish. Their dedication, enthusiasm and expertise created the powerful foundation for this workshop over the last seven years.

We also acknowledge and appreciate the collaboration of the many workshop leaders, instructors, editors; women who mentored and added their insight into this filmmaking process. We are also grateful to EMMEDIA Gallery and Production Society and Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers who provided the technical and financial inkind support for InCamera.

Words are barely enough to acknowledge the time, effort, dedication and commitment as we acknowledge and bid a fond farewell to Sandi, Shauna and Corrine as the InCamera Core. On behalf of herland and the InCamera participants, we appreciate all you’ve done and all the filmmakers and films you’ve helped to nurture and create. Thank you.
