Nadia’s Journey
Director: Nadia Zouaoui and Carmen Garcia2006 - 72 minutes
Distributor: NFB

A courageous documentary exposing the obscurantism that still exists at the dawn of the 21st century in the Kabylie region of Algeria. The film recounts how women are held captive in their homes and illustrates the cruelty of customs dictating the status of women in family and society.
Fascinating individuals explain how these strict rules are imposed, divesting girls and women of the right to move about freely or speak out, and even depriving them of the desire to defend their rights and liberties. The underlying patriarchal violence inherent to the situation is evident - a violence that is often misused in the name of the Moslem religion and respect for traditions. Nadia's Journey is a cry of revolt yet imbued with surprising sensitivity and poetry.
