About Us

Established in 1989 by the Calgary Status of Women Action Committee, herland annually features a range of innovative works by Canadian women media artists.

herland is run by a core committee of practicing media artists and community programmers. Respecting and celebrating our differences as women, and addressing power imbalance within our own communities is integral to the feminist vision of herland.

Our vision supports the advancement of aboriginal artists and artists of colour, and herland showcases queer women artists throughout the festival. Work is solicited through an open call for submissions and no fee is required.

In 2001 herland organized its first Transgender Panel Discussion
This year herland will have a similar panel dealing with gender identity, and featuring WG Burnham's film, 'Gender Line Extended'.

In 1999 herland forged ahead in a new direction of programming Canadian, independent work. herland’s past practice has been to facilitate community programming by committees who specify particular critical contexts that they feel are of relevance to their communities. This model has gone a long way toward educating audiences to diverse issues and perspectives, sharing power with marginalized communities through their self-representation, and introducing women to the programming process.

Video Production Workshop: As part of the last two festivals herland has sponsored a video production workshop for local video artists. The short works are created, filmed and edited in one week. The final product is shown during the festival giving the artist the skills to create a video and then the audience a chance to view it. If you are interested in participating in the 2004 Video Production Workshop you must submit your proposal by January 5, 2004. For more information on what should be in your proposal view the Video Production Workshop Submissions guidelines or contact the herland office.

Festivals are programmed partly by a programming co-ordinator in consultation with community groups, and partly by guest curation.
